"Micronutrients & Dietary Supplements for the Prevention of Chronic Disease: A Public Health Perspective public"

Saverio Stranges

University of Warwick Medical School

Coventry UK

ABSTRACT

" The lecture will provide an overview on the use of dietary supplements, in relation to the following aspects: epidemiological trends, social, cultural and legislative context. Benefits and risks associated with dietary supplements will be discussed with regard to chronic disease, specifically cancer, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and mortality. A specific focus will be on selenium, an essential trace mineral with anti-oxidant properties that has been hypothesized to prevent cancer and possibly other chronic disease. The following aspects will be addressed: a) physiological role of selenium; b) scientific evidence on the relationship between selenium status/supplementation and chronic disease; c) ongoing studies; d) future directions. Saverio Stranges – Short Biography Dr. Stranges is currently an Associate Professor of Cardiovascular Epidemiology in the Health Sciences Research Institute at the University of Warwick Medical School, UK. He is originally from Italy, where he completed his medical school, and specialty training in Preventive Medicine. Before moving to the UK, Dr Stranges spent four years in the US (2002-06) where he completed his doctoral program in Epidemiology and started his academic career as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine in the School of Public Health at the State University of New York in Buffalo. His research primarily focuses on the epidemiology and prevention of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. In particular, he studies the effects of traditional and emerging risk factors as well the effects of non-pharmacological interventions in the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. In the time spent in Buffalo (2002-2006), Dr Stranges had the opportunity to be part of the instigative team of the Nutritional Prevention of Cancer (NPC) Trial, the only completed long-term randomized clinical trial of selenium supplementation in chronic disease prevention. Specifically, he led a series of secondary analyses from the NPC trial, aimed at examining the effect of long-term selenium supplementation on cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Thereafter, Dr Stranges has been involved in a number of projects and research outputs on the effect of selenium and other micronutrients on cardiovascular and metabolic disease in several populations across Europe and US. Among the others: NPC Trial, and National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), USA; National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS) and Whitehall II Study, UK; ORDET Study (EPIC) and Olivetti Heart Study, Italy.
